A perfume is chosen in three steps, in this order. First, the fragrance family, meaning the type of scent you like: citrus, floral, chypre, or woody. Next, the intensity, how much you want it to be noticed. And finally, the concentration: Eau Fraîche, Eau de Toilette, or Eau de Parfum.

How a perfume evolves on the skin

A perfume is a blend of aromatic materials dissolved in alcohol, and not all of them evaporate at the same rate. The most volatile ones, such as citrus, are what you smell first and what fades the fastest: the top notes. Flowers usually occupy the heart. Woods, patchouli, or tonka bean evaporate slowly and form the base, which remains hours later.

This explains two things in this guide. A perfume with a strong woody base is more noticeable and lasts longer than one that is purely citrusy, even if they have the same concentration. And that is why you must test it on your skin and wait before deciding.

1. The fragrance family: what type of scent you like

Every perfume in the Perfumes collection states its family and its notes. These are the major families you will find.

Citrus and fresh

They smell clean, like leaves and fruit peels. The Eau Fraîche Thé Vert is fresh citrus, with green tea notes, and the Eau Fraîche Verveine is musky citrus with verbena. The Eau de Parfum Sel d'Azur is fresh citrus, with lemon, grapefruit, and cedar; the Eau de Parfum Verte Envolée is green citrus with bergamot, lemon, black tea, and rose.

Floral

The flower is the star. The Eau de Parfum Plein Soleil is solar floral, with tuberose, ylang-ylang, and sandalwood. The Eau de Parfum Sur la Lande is oriental floral, with chamomile, jasmine, and algae. The Eau de Parfum Garden Party is woody floral, with damask rose and spearmint.

Chypre

This is a classic perfumery accord: a fresh opening over a deeper base, often patchouli. The Eau de Parfum Comme une Evidence is floral chypre, with bergamot, damask rose, and patchouli. The Eau de Parfum L'Evidence is a luminous chypre, with peach, magnolia, and patchouli.

Woody

Warmer and with more depth. The Granit Bleu Eau de Toilette is marine woody, with bergamot, Breton seaweed, and sand vetiver. The Ambre Noir Eau de Toilette is spicy woody, with tonka bean, cardamom, patchouli, and cinnamon.

If you like perfumes that smell clean, start with the citrus ones. If you prefer a more enveloping trail, try the chypre or woody ones.

2. The intensity: how much you want it to be noticed

We assign an intensity to each perfume, from the softest to the most pronounced:

For the office or a hot day, a fresh or balanced intensity is usually more comfortable: in heat, perfume evaporates faster and projects more. For the evening, or when you want it to be noticed, step up to +++ or ++++.

3. The concentration: Eau Fraîche, Eau de Toilette, or Eau de Parfum

The concentration is the proportion of aromatic materials versus alcohol. Higher concentration means more material to evaporate, which is why perfume usually lasts longer and leaves a stronger trail. From lowest to highest:

  1. Eau Fraîche: the lightest. The Eaux Fraîches collection is inspired by the botanical garden of La Gacilly, in Brittany, and Thé Vert and Verveine have a fresh intensity.
  2. Eau de Toilette: more presence than an Eau Fraîche. The collection includes Granit Bleu, Ambre Noir, and Hoggar.
  3. Eau de Parfum: the most concentrated of the three, with the most marked trail. This is the case for Comme une Evidence, L'Evidence, Sel d'Azur, Plein Soleil, Sur la Lande, Garden Party, and Verte Envolée.

Concentration and intensity are not the same. Ambre Noir is an Eau de Toilette and yet it is ++++, due to its tonka bean and patchouli base; Garden Party is an Eau de Parfum and is ++. How long a perfume lasts also depends on your skin, the climate, and where you apply it.

Why we use plant-based alcohol

The alcohol in a perfume is not just the solvent that dilutes the aromatic materials: it is also the first thing to evaporate and what releases the fragrance onto the skin. At Yves Rocher, we use plant-based alcohol—fermented from plants, not petroleum-derived—and every perfume declares what percentage of its ingredients is of natural origin.

How to test a perfume before deciding

  • Test it on your skin, not just on paper, and wait a few minutes: the top notes fade and the heart appears.
  • Do not test more than three or four in a row, because your nose will become saturated.
  • To test our most iconic perfume for several days before moving to the large bottle, there is the Eau de Parfum Comme une Evidence in 5 mL.
  • Avoid contact with eyes and do not apply to irritated skin.

How natural is each perfume

We provide the percentage of ingredients of natural origin for each perfume. The Eau de Parfum Comme une Evidence declares 81%, with 100% botanical-based alcohol. The Eau Fraîche Thé Vert declares 98%, with plant-based alcohol.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between Eau de Parfum and Eau de Toilette?

The concentration: Eau de Parfum contains more aromatic materials and usually leaves a more marked trail than Eau de Toilette. But the notes also count, which is why we provide the intensity of each perfume.

What is an Eau Fraîche?

It is the lightest concentration in the collection. Eaux Fraîches, such as Thé Vert or Verveine, have a fresh intensity and revolve around a star note: green tea or verbena.

Which perfume should I choose if I like fresh scents?

Look for the citrus family. The Eau Fraîche Thé Vert is fresh citrus, with green tea. If you want more presence, the Eau de Parfum Sel d'Azur is also fresh citrus, with lemon, grapefruit, and cedar, in a balanced intensity.

Are there perfumes for men?

Yes. Ambre Noir and Granit Bleu are presented as fragrances for men: the former is spicy woody and the latter marine woody. In the end, what matters is that you like the scent.

Will I smell exactly like someone else using the same perfume?

No. Your skin's pH, its temperature, its natural oils, and even your diet change how aromatic materials are perceived, so the same perfume smells different on each person. That is why we insist on testing it on your skin, not on paper, before deciding.

What does "chypre" mean in a perfume?

It is a classic fragrance family that combines a fresh opening with a deep base, often patchouli. Comme une Evidence (bergamot, damask rose, and patchouli) and L'Evidence (peach, magnolia, and patchouli) are chypres.
