A vegan cosmetic does not contain any ingredient that comes from an animal, neither from its body nor from what it produces. A vegetarian one excludes what comes from the animal's body, such as collagen or fats, but it may contain honey or beeswax. At Yves Rocher all our products are vegetarian, we have more than 600 vegan formulas worldwide, and we have not conducted animal testing since 1989.

What it means to be vegan

Veganism begins at the table: a diet without products of animal origin or their derivatives, which also excludes dairy, eggs, and honey. Behind it lies a conviction against animal abuse and exploitation, which is why it becomes a lifestyle that extends to other consumption decisions. Those who are vegan usually avoid leather and wool, as well as cosmetics with ingredients of animal origin, such as keratin or collagen.

Vegan and vegetarian, in a cosmetic

The difference lies in a single line:

  • A vegetarian cosmetic does not contain any ingredient that comes from an animal's body, such as collagen or animal fats.
  • A vegan cosmetic also does not contain anything produced by an animal, such as eggs, milk, honey, or beeswax, and is free from animal exploitation.

How we formulate at Yves Rocher

We put plants at the center of all our products. It has been our identity since we were born, more than 60 years ago. Our experts have studied more than 1,100 ingredients of plant and natural origin, and for each formula, we choose those that best fulfill the cosmetic benefit we are looking for, respect the skin's integrity, and have a lower impact on the planet.

That is why all our products are vegetarian, and more than 600 of our formulas around the world are vegan. In our Colombian store, we indicate this on each product page; vegan formulas include, for example, the Anti-âge Global Regenerating Treatment, the Brightening Eye Contour, the Multi-Protection UV Shield SPF50+, the Monoï Hand Cream, and the 48H Chamomile Antiperspirant. More facial care in facial care.

When there is no satisfactory alternative, we use some natural ingredients of animal production whose collection does not affect the animals' integrity, such as honey or beeswax. They help with the formula's efficacy and the user experience. We continue to look for vegan alternatives, including in makeup: in 2021 we launched our Length and Volume mascaras, which are vegan.

What the law regulates

There is no regulation defining the term "vegan," so there is no official definition of what a vegan product must comply with. Cruelty-free is something else: it refers to the absence of animal cruelty, for example in the form of animal testing. In Europe, animal testing for cosmetics was banned in stages: for finished products since 2004, for ingredients since 2009, and the sale of animal-tested cosmetics since 2013.

Animal testing

We do not test on animals. Since 1989, 15 years before European regulations, we pioneered the cosmetic industry by deciding to stop experimenting on animals, and three years later we received the gold medal from the SPA.

We decided early on. In 1989, when the cosmetic industry was still testing on animals, we stopped doing so with our finished products and replaced those tests with alternative methods. In 1992, the French Society for the Protection of Animals (SPA) awarded us their Gold Medal for that decision.

Frequently asked questions

Are Yves Rocher products vegan?

They are all vegetarian, and more than 600 of our formulas around the world are vegan. Some contain ingredients like honey or beeswax when there is no plant-based alternative that works the same way. On each product, we tell you if its formula is vegan.

What is the difference between vegan and vegetarian in cosmetics?

A vegetarian cosmetic does not have ingredients that come from an animal's body, such as collagen. A vegan one, in addition, does not have anything the animal produces, such as honey, milk, or beeswax.

Does Yves Rocher test on animals?

No. We stopped doing so in 1989, 15 years before European regulations required it.

Do vegan and cruelty-free mean the same thing?

No. Vegan refers to the ingredients: none of animal origin. Cruelty-free refers to how the product is developed: without animal cruelty, for example without animal testing.
